Music

The St Nicholas Vision For Music

At St Nicholas CE First School, we strive to cultivate a real enjoyment of music and aim to deliver high quality music teaching, supporting and encouraging all children to achieve their full potential. We are committed to the provision of a musical education for all children, which within the context of the National Curriculum, encompasses breadth of experience, depth of knowledge and quality of understanding.

Aims

Every child is entitled to receive a broad, balanced and relevant musical experience within the framework of the National Curriculum.

Through Music at St Nicholas, we aim to:

  • Foster a love and understanding of music through active involvement in listening, appraising, composing and performing.
  • Enable children’s personal expression, reflection and emotional development through music making, both individually and together.
  • Promote the understanding and appreciation of the richness and diversity of world cultures, styles, times and periods.
  • Encourage opportunities to perform to the school and wider community.

As well as opportunities within lessons, children at St Nicholas have opportunities to learn to play a tuned musical instrument. At present all children in Years 3 and 4 learn to play a ukulele that they take home to practise with.  In addition children at St Nicholas may choose to access peripatetic music lessons before and during the school day in guitar, flute, violin and keyboard.

Throughout the year we plan opportunities for children to perform for an audience in assemblies, church worship, school events, end of year and Nativity performances and concerts. Each year children eperform in some way to parents as a year group:

Nursery – Nativity

Reception – Nativity

Year 1 – Nativity

Year 2 – Nativity

Year 3 – Easter Play

Year 4 – Summer Leavers performance

In addition to this we have regular showcase opportunities for children through events such as St Nics Got Talent, bring an instrument to school afternoons and work as part of the Local Arts Festival including opportunities to sing with much renowned Ex Cathedra!

If you would like to find out more about our provision for Music in school please see your child’s class teacher, Mr Gough or Miss Parker for more information.
